It's your source of class information, swing news, and events around Canberra and interstate, like the swing event at the end of the earth: the Devil City Swing festival in Hobart 27-29 June! If you have anything you would like to contribute like a review, photos, band dates, vintage stuff, weblinks or simply a comment on what you love about swing, send us an email. Jumptown provides as much opportunity as possible to support your swing dance addiction :o) Really, there is no better way to get confident on the dancefloor than by coming along to our social dance events, which are held almost every week. This week we have our regular social dance on Thursday night from 8:30pm at McGregor Hall. Then on Saturday evening 17 May, join Jumptown for an exciting new event - a Blues Dancing night in the most fabulous of venues, Tilley's Devine Cafe in Lyneham! (NB volunteers needed - see below) Come and learn about Blues with a free taster class at 7.30pm (p.s. it's a great way to introduce your friends to Swing Dance!) Swingin' the Blues @ Tilley's Cafe - Saturday 17 May Blues dancing is part of the swing family and was danced in the 1930s and 40s alongside 1920s Charleston, Balboa, and Collegiate Shag. If you're not familiar with blues dancing, come early for a free taster class or take advantage of the slower tracks to find your groove with some laid-back Lindy Hop. Tilley's is a great place to bring non-swing friends for a cruisy night of smokin' blues music, fine wine and good company. Tilleys has a great dinner and cake menu, so grab some dinner or a pick-me-up snack to keep you dancing through the night. DJ Workshop - Sunday 1 June (before Capital Swing) Ever wondered what's involved in becoming a swing DJ? Or any other kind of DJ for that matter? It's not just about playing all your favourite songs (though there is a bit of that) - it's about building the mood, balancing tempos and keeping your dancers satisfied and on the dancefloor. This workshop is a great way to expand your knowledge of this mysterious art form, technology and music in general, and is fun and educational even if you don't have aspirations to get behind the decks (or laptop). 'Iron DJ' Russell Turner will show you the ropes in this information-packed 1 hour session. Devil City Swing (Hobart Lindy Exchange) - 27-29 June After a huge success last year, Tasmania is once again hosting Devil City Swing!! They are cramming in more social dancing, live jazz/blues/swing bands and smokin' DJs into one weekend than ever thought possible! The highlight event is the 'Fire and Ice' Ball on the Saturday night featuring the Cake Walking Babies. This year they are venturing out past the bright lights of HObart to head north to Kempton and Dysart for a night of devilish delights.... with plenty of opportunity to sample some of Tassie's most famous produce (think beer, wine, cheese, and of course apples!) Early bird regos (and payment) close by the 26th May. For $80 you will be entertained by 3 nights of dancing, hosted at Woodfield for sat night (if you dare to sleep), clothed in a famous Devil City Swing tee and fed a scrumptious cooked breakfast on Sunday morning. Swingtime Balboa Workshop in Sydney - 5-6 July Swingtime in Sydney are very excited to announce that Nick Williams and Valerie Salstrom from USA, will be in Sydney for an "All Balboa Filled" Weekend on 5-6 July. Russell and Miranda can highly recommend you attend this event to expand your balboa world!
