What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing (WCS) was a dance developed from Lindy Hop in the United Stateas a response to changing music styles and was recognised as a separate dance in the early 1960s. It is very popular in the US and is danced to slow blues, pop and R&B music. It is characterised by being danced in a slot, the use of syncopations and the emphasis on musical interpretation. There is also an emphasis on the lead-follow partnership and the opportunity for both partners to play. It is, at its heart, a social dance but also has a strong competition presence in the US.
