What is Balboa?
Balboa is a stylish swing dance originally developed in the early 1930s in California, USA. Balboa emphasizes intricate footwork, has great partner connection and can be danced at all tempos without expending too much energy. You may have seen dancers dancing very closely together and smoothly on the dance floor, looking quite relaxed in their upper bodies but with amazing footwork patterns...? Well, that’s Balboa!
Jumptown Swing teaches a combination of Balboa and swing, also known as Bal-Swing. Balboa is a great way to expand your swing dancing and learn more about lead-follow connection and movement patterns in dance.
Russell and Miranda have been learning and teaching Balboa since 2005, attending overseas and interstate workshops every year. They love the dreamy styling and detail in the dance, and to share their skills with students. They can truly say that Balboa has improved their Lindy Hop and partner connection, and they are very keen to promote Balboa dancing in Canberra.
Beginner Balboa Workshops
Beginner Balboa Workshops are an ideal way to build skills in the basic Balboa steps and moves in a short timeframe. The 3-hour workshops run every few months or so at a cost of just $25. To register or express interest in a workshop, private lessons or performances, please contact Russell (see below) and keep an eye out on the jumptown! Swing newsletters.
How can I find out more?
Contact Russell at russell@jumptown.org or phone 0404 849 463, or approach Miranda or Russell at a social dance and ask for a demonstration!
