The Jumptown Jam is Canberra's annual all Lindy hop and Solo Jazz workshop weekend. We pride ourselves on bringing Canberra the best teachers and bands from around the world and Australia. This year is no different and 2018 marks the 10th year of The Jam!
Based in Barcelona but regulars on the international Lindy Hop circuit, Hector and Sonia are well-known for their innovative and powerful dance style. They’ve placed at numerous international events (including the International Lindy Hop Championships) and are in demand around the world as instructors. With over 20 years combined teaching experience, Hector and Sonia’s workshops reflect their passion for swing dance and jazz music, with a focus on quality of movement, partner communication, creativity and originality. The 2018 Jumptown Jam will mark their Australian debut.
Two of Australia’s finest swing dancers and teachers, Georgia and Kieran teach popular weekly Lindy Hop and Solo Jazz classes in Melbourne. With many years of dancing and teaching experience between them, they’ve placed in numerous competitions (including the Australian Jitterbug Championships and Australian Swing Dance Championships), and in 2013 they took out the Australian Hellzapoppin Prize. Georgia and Kieran bring energy, enthusiasm and a solid practicality to their teaching, all of which is underpinned by a love of social dancing.
John Black and Ben Schumann formed BlackSchu Band and play classic swingin' tunes, infused with blues and jazz. Every note counts with their infectious grooves, heartfelt vocals and wailing solos. The BlackSchu Band have played at the Thredbo Blues Festival, Australian Blues Festival and The Street Theatre “The Bar on the Wrong Side of the Tracks”. Catch them on Friday evening!
Andrew Dickeson's Blue Rhythm Band is a band for dancers. They know what lindy hoppers want and never fail to deliver. Basically they do what Basie did – play 4 solid beats to the bar with no cheating! Travelling from Sydney especially for The Jam, these top jazz musicians are guaranteed to get you on your feet and swinging out hard. Don’t miss them on Saturday evening!
The Jam does not hold level auditions, and with this approach there are always challenges in getting the ability mix ‘just right’ in workshop situations. To make it work, we ask you that you exercise self-awareness and choose your stream carefully. Do not try and jump up a stream to be with your friends, or pick your stream based on someone else you think you may be dancing better than. To get the most out of a workshop weekend like this, it is important you stay true to yourself and your abilities. Be fair to the other students in your class, and don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. The teachers may ask you to move streams, and if this is the case, please respect their decision. They are all regular teachers in their home scene, teaching from beginners to advanced plus, so trust their judgment and understand that they just want to ensure you get the most out of the workshops. With the right attitude, we promise you’ll get loads of valuable stuff out of whichever stream you are in. And if you are unsure which level you should be in, never fear! Ask your teacher or email us.
You regularly attend a level 2 or 3 class (or equivalent) in your local scene. You have been dancing for a little while (1 to 2 years, or more) and social dance regularly. You feel comfortable with swingouts, lindy circles, tuck turns, transitions and other common 6 and 8 count material, as well as the Charleston basic and variations. You may have heard about things like musicality and connection and are keen to know more. This stream will focus on developing your repertoire of moves, as well as working on your overall technique and style.
You attend and can confidently achieve the material taught in a level 3 or 4 class in your local scene. You are an experienced social dancer, and likely a performer, competitor or teacher. You have strong technique, can learn new material at a quick pace, and are very comfortable improvising. You can grasp and play with footwork and rhythm variations and incorporate them into your social dancing, and you're able to dance at a range of tempos. This stream will focus on challenging you and pushing your dancing out of your comfort zone.
The Jam will feature an Mix & Match Competition on Saturday night. In the preliminary round, leads and follows will be randomly drawn to social dance together to a couple of songs (of varying styles and tempos) in an all-skate format, and will be judged as individuals. Dancers selected to compete in the final will be randomly assigned a partner again, but will be judged as a couple as they dance in a spotlight format. Anyone is welcome to enter - good luck!
The Jam is dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable event experience for everyone. All students, teachers, volunteers, musicians, and other staff are required to comply with our the Jumptown Swing Code of Conduct.
The Jam organisers reserve the right to take any action deemed necessary to ensure the Code of Conduct is followed. This may include asking you to not attend our events.
By attending the Jam in any capacity, you are agreeing to uphold the Code of Conduct. Please read prior to registration.
If at any time during the Jam you experience or witness anything that makes you feel unsafe, uncomfortable or in need of help, please get in touch with us immediately. You can ask at the front desk for Adam or Dixie. All concerns will be treated confidentially
All classes and Friday and Saturday night socials will be at Merici College at either the O'Donnell Youth Centre (OYC) or Gymnasium (on site at Merici). See the schedule for more information.
Sunday evening's social will be at the Duxton in O'Connor! The Duxton social is known to be the best way to wind down and have dinner with your new Jam buddies. Our DJs will be playing some smooth Lindy, blues and a bit of soul music!
Early-bird registration closes 16 March for the Jam Pass (all workshops and socials). The price will go from $275 to $290.</p>
If you'd like to volunteer, contact us and we'd love to have you help us with everything from set-up and pack-up, checking registrations, or grabbing lunches during the workshop. Volunteers make the Jam happen, so we'd love all the help. We'd like to give $30 discount on the Jam Pass if you offer your time over the weekend (applies to early bird price too i.e. $245).
