1930′s: Swing into WWII (April 27th)
As part of the 100 Years of Canberra celebrations, SoCanDance presents Kick Up Your Heels, a monthly social dance to celebrate every decade of Canberra’s history.
Social Dancing has always lifted the spirits and to counteract the Depression in the 1930s, swing dancing developed, originally in the ballrooms of Harlem, danced to the big band swing music of the day. The music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Glen Miller helped counteract the looming horrors in Europe.
On 27 April, The Albert Hall will come alive once again with Jumptown Swing dance school along with their performance troupe ‘ The Jammers’ and double live band action with Spectrum Big Band and Moochers Inc. Swing into WW2 will uplift spirits once again with an infectious vibe and evening of fun. There will be a dance lesson, so come and learn the Lindy Hop and the Charleston and discover why this dance revolution popularised itself during tough times and changed the world over. No prior experience necessary.
